The equations in this book explore the reasons for the changes we see in spring. These combinations of words and symbols are science. But they are also something more. As an illustrator, I look for opportunities to add humor, action or elements that provide additional backstory to help bring the characters to life. I have illustrated many books for different authors. It’s like opening a present when I get a new manuscript to illustrate because it is always something unexpected that has a unique point of view from anything I’ve worked on before. Everyone has a movie playing in their minds as they read a story where they imagine what the characters and settings look like. It’s a joy and responsibility to try to render a story that an author has labored over.<br />

Captains Log: Snowbound follows a boy who is working on a school project about Ernest Shackleton’s voyage to the South Pole. When the boy and his family find themselves snowed in for a few days, he relates his experience to Shackleton’s expedition being marooned at the South Pole. The boy imagines that his family is the crew of a ship and he becomes suspicious of a mutiny by his younger brother the Scallywag.<br />

This story is full of humor and clever historic and nautical references. I tried to tie those elements together by making the book look like journal pages with taped in photos and scribbled doodles on top of the illustrations. I also wanted to make the house look as boat-like as I could with a round porthole window, a chimney smoke stack and telephone poles that resemble ship’s masts. I was fortunate to find a side-view cutaway diagram of Shackelton’s ship <i>The Endurance</i>, so I added that to the book alongside a cut away view of the boy’s house. I try to add lots of subtle details and visual jokes that I hope will encourage kids and their parents to want to read the book over and over, and hopefully notice new things that they might have missed the first time.</div>

When I’m illustrating chapter books like the Ellie May books, I don’t have the luxury of doing large full color paintings like I do in a picture book. Even through small, black and white illustrations I still want to capture the larger that life character of Ellie May.</div>

In both books, Ellie May throws herself wholeheartedly into an event at school. Her eagerness causes her to pursue a variety of ill conceived approaches before she achieves her goals of being the Flag Leader on Presidents’ Day and the funniest prankster on April Fools' Day.</div>

Ellie May’s personality charmed me from the beginning. She is the same age as my twin daughters, so I could easily relate to her. She is bursting with good intentions and despite many failures, she is relentlessly optimistic. Some of my favorite moments to illustrate were moments that Ellie May imagined: on the monkey bars, she pretends that a giant squid is attacking her; her artistic friend Lizzie draws a fairy chasing off a troll with bees. Ellie also reads a bunch of interesting trivia that was so much fun to draw, such as George Washington with hippopotamus teeth or Abraham Lincoln covered in cats.</div>

When his Ernest Shackleton report is ironically quashed because of a snowstorm, a school cancellation-celebrating elementary schooler chronicles his adventures at home with hilarious log entries and read-aloud-friendly results.<br />

The Captain's (our young protagonist) belongings start to go missing while homebound due to weather, and humorous attacks and pell-mell mutiny follow. After a series of snow day events, the crew (the Captain's parents), the first mate (his trusty dog), and the scallywag (also known as the younger sibling) are freed from their snowbound home, and the Captain returns to school.</div>

<a name='more'></a>People are often curious how a creator came up with the idea for a new book, and it can be fun for the author to go back to that pivotal moment when a story seed caught hold in the dirt.<br />

<span style="text-align: center;"><i>Stretch to the Sun: From a Tiny Sprout to the Tallest Tree on Earth</i></span> dawned in a tired hotel room boasting overly-large patterned carpet and faded curtains. In lower Michigan. The geopoint is important to note because the story is rooted 2,500 miles away in northern California. (More on that in a minute). My mom and I were sharing the hotel room while daughter #3 attended an out-of-town volleyball camp. Mom drove north from her home while I drove south, and we met for a night to get caught up. It was mid-August, and I was tired of being hot.<br />

I rose early to finish final edits for my second book, <i>A Cool Summer Tail</i>, coincidentally about how animals adapt to heat. It’s written in rhyme, and the edits were literally breaking my brain. My mom heard me sigh—again—and said, “Honey, do you know what’s happening in the top of redwood trees?” I appreciated the diversion but wanted to get the edits done so I gave a limp response, “No, but I bet it’s cool up there.” She said, “Not only cool but there’s an entire ecosystem no one knew about because it’s so high off the ground, and it wasn’t until tree researchers figured out a way to climb up that they started to learn about it. You should watch the National Geographic special about it. A researcher climbs the tallest tree on Earth.” </div>

Wait. What? Questions immediately formed in my head. The tallest tree on earth? How tall is it? How did they figure that out? How did they find it? How did the researcher get up there? Who is this researcher? Why is he interested? Are there others? What are they learning?<br />
<br />
That was it. Game over. The story seed caught hold and my final edits instantly became even harder to finish.<br />
<br />
What was it about this tree, this ecosystem, this untold story that grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go for the five years it took to bring it to market? What kept me pursuing it through the inevitable frustrations of research, dead ends, multiple drafts, critiques, and lots of waiting? </div>

Yes, it was the tree and ecosystem and untold story. It was also learning something new about that environment and its social history and wanting to share it with readers both young and old. It was recognizing how close we came to destroying this ancient voice but how people came together to save it. It was shining a light on the beauty and wonder of nature. But the seed began with my mom’s voice telling me there was a special world waiting and I could jump in. <br />

The coast redwood tree provides a unique ecosystem for the many plants and animals in its tree canopy and managed to survive extensive harvesting by loggers nearby. <a name='more'></a>It’s not too hard to hook kids with a topic like insects. Kids love trivia about crazy creatures. But a great picture book must resonate with both the children and the adults who read to them. It needs to convey a message that speaks to everyone. And not all adults love insects as much as I do. So, for years I cast about, searching for a six-legged message that could bring together kids and the adults who love them. <br />
<br />
<i>Bugs Don’t Hug</i> came from a moment of heartbreak I witnessed when hiking with a friend and her kids. <br />
<br />
“Mommy, mommy, mom – look!” Christopher held up his prize, one spiny leg clinging to the edge of his palm. <br />
<br />
My friend Carey’s cheek twitched. Her voice wavered a bit as she stepped backwards and instructed him to return the cricket to nature. As her son cradled the creature and trotted away, Cary shuddered. She worked hard to keep her emotions in check when every instinct would have had her stomping the insect. <br />
<br />
That moment of family strife ate at me. Christopher and I had always shared a passion for bugs, but Carey held a lifetime of loathing. Observing that tiny rip in the bond between mother and child that day, my heart hurt. <br />
<br />
We headed down the trail. At every stop, the kids and I turned over logs and marveled at the life underneath. Carey stood back, patient, waiting, but with tension still on her face.<br />

"Look!" Christopher pointed at a dark body curving around miniature white versions of herself.<br />

"An earwig," I told the kids. "And she’s keeping her babies safe."<br />
<br />
Carey stepped closer.<br />
<br />
"She’ll feed them too," I explained. "And if any kid strays too far, she’ll chase after them, just like your mom keeps you from running out into the road."<br />
<br />
Carey leaned in.<br />
<br />
"And when they were still eggs," I said, "she gave each one a bath."<br />
<br />
A little “Aww” escaped from Carey’s mouth. <br />
<br />
Right then and there, it clicked. My friend suddenly cared because she shared something with the six-legged mother. And that was the universal message I needed. <br />
<br />
Later I wondered what other kinds of insects take care of their young. I dug into my favorite part of the book-making process – research! After combing academic tomes, interviewing experts, and studying scientific papers for a few years, I had a list of fascinating facts. <br />
<br />
But straight facts aren’t much fun. So I played with those facts. I took each behavior and I exaggerated it. What if, instead of just removing his young’s frass (poop) from their tunnel, a daddy ambrosia beetle was on diaper duty? What if, instead of forming a natal chamber out of feces, a mother dung beetle was baking a birthday cake? <br />

This was getting fun. I could envision kids giggling at this. But a list – even a giggle-inducing list – is just bits of trivia. A random list doesn’t lead to a universal message. <br />
<br />
I dissected picture books, seeking ways to turn lists into literature. What I was lacking was a solid structure. The structure that worked? A “through-the-day” sequence. That’s a structure young children can relate to, and parents know all too well the challenges of the daily routine. This structure reinforced the book’s theme. It turned that trivia into a timeless message of all that we have in common – even with our six-legged friends. <br />
<br />
And that is how a moment of heartbreak became a book. <br />

<a name='more'></a>When I had my first baby, I considered her a little miracle. Yes, I had spit-up on my shoulders and an endless round of dirty diapers, no time to brush my own teeth, and lots of lost sleep. But I’ll always remember the warm feel of her snuggling while breastfeeding and how she listened intently to my husband’s songs. Her first smile lit up the room (and still does!), and her first belly laugh was music to our ears. Perhaps her favorite thing, though, was to crawl up on a lap to look at a book together. (Spoiler alert: Now she’s a children’s librarian!)<br />
<br />
Rewind a bit more to when I was in college. A popular peace slogan was, “What if they gave a war, and nobody came?” Once I’d tasted the joys of interacting with my own young baby, a twist on that slogan popped into my head—“What if they gave a baby, and nobody came?” That thought brought me to tears, and still does.<br />
<br />
Babies need everything, and bonding with a parent who can nurture them is essential to their physical and emotional well-being. Babies can accomplish amazing feats—if they have a cheering section behind them. Babies’ brains grow fastest in that first year. Parents have a huge influence over how their baby’s brain grows. Their support affects how their children will act, move, learn, and socialize throughout their lives. <br />
<br />
In the 1960s, Kodak ran a TV commercial using a Malvina Reynolds song that makes me cry every time I think of it (to this day!). “Turn around and you’re two / turn around and you’re four / turn around and you’re a young girl going out of the door.” A childhood flies by, so you’ve got to pay attention and savor all those little moments, trials and triumphs along the way.<br />
<br />
Fast forward to the present, when I’ve had the good fortune to see our family’s next generation starting—new babies (now little girls) going through the same round of amazing milestones. <br />
<br />
Into my writer’s mind popped a simple, rhyming litany of all those fabulous firsts: first roll, then creep. First crawl, then sleep. I wanted it be so simple that babies could sit still to finish while enjoying the rhyme and rhythm, as well as a book today’s parents could relate to and love sharing with their babies. <br />
<br />
I am lucky that Charlesbridge’s editors shared my vision—and extended it to include babies from three different families. Michael Emberley’s humorous and human illustrations show both mothers and fathers exhibiting the full range of exhilaration and exhaustion their much-loved babies bring.<br />
<br />
I couldn’t be more excited that my first book for babies and the parents who love them is coming out into the world today. Happy book birthday, <i>Baby’s Firsts</i>!<br />

Rose Ann Tahe was born into the Naaneesh't'ezhi Tachii'nii nish'li (The Charcoal Streaked Division of the Red Running Into the Water Clan), born for Ashiihi bashish'chiin (Salt People Clan). Rose held a doctoral degree in elementary education leadership and a master's degree in elementary education. Rose died in 2015, and her son and three daughters support this posthumous publication.<br />
<br />
Nancy Bo Flood was a research psychologist and studied brain development at the University of Minnesota and the University of London before writing books for children. She has a special interest in legends and folklore. Her titles include <i>Soldier Sister, Fly Home</i>; <i>Warriors in the Crossfire</i>; and <i>Cowboy Up! Ride the Navajo Rodeo</i>.<br />

Johnny Nelson is a Navajo graphic designer, graphic artist, and illustrator. He is Kiiyaa'áanii (Towering House Clan) and Naakai Dine'é (Mexican Clan). Johnny designs and creates art and illustrations with paints, pixels, and ballpoint pens. This is his first picture book.<br />

<a name='more'></a><b><span style="color: #0b5394;"><i>1. Where did the idea for </i>A Moon for Moe and Mo<i> come from? What was your inspiration?</i></span></b><br />
I was shopping with my toddler granddaughter by my side (the book is dedicated to her!) at the famous store, Sahadi’s, in Brooklyn, where I have been buying for years: spices, teas, middle-eastern food, breads. There was mother in a chador wearing a head scarf next to me waiting on line with her very young child. Both children began to interact. It was right before the Jewish holidays where I like to stock up on products I can cook with from my own recipes—there are rugelach and date cookie recipes in the back of the book. The neighborhood has many stores from various Arabic countries, which I love, and find the food similar to Israeli cuisine.<br />
<br />
In addition, over the years I have done three peace picture books, several cookbooks for children, besides YA novels and poetry books. After being invited to speak at many international schools in countries where I visited mosques and old synagogues, doing this book was a natural outgrowth of those broadening journeys to other cultures. I remember sitting on the floor in a large dusty mosque with dust motes floating in the still warm air of Cairo; seeing one of the oldest temples there, too in the old city, where no Jews are left to worship; awakened from sleep, hearing the iman at four in the morning over a loud speaker for the first time, stunned; or sunning myself on a roof in Ethiopia, listening to the call to prayer, enjoying the rhythm of the musical sounds of those chants, like Hebrew. Those are the moments that brought me to this book.<br />

<i><b><span style="color: #0b5394;">2. What was it like working with your editor, Yolanda Scott? How did she help you bring out the best in this book?</span></b></i><br />
Like me, she is a perfectionist. She would call me, or email, with the most critical eye, and I truly love that. It shows me that the person is in my head and on the same page, trying to make the book the best it can be. Even after it was completed—and first run-through on the printing—she was making edits. And I joined her on that path. Happily.<br />

<i><b><span style="color: #0b5394;">3. As a Jewish author, why was it so important to you to have a Muslim illustrator for this book?</span></b></i><br />
Well, I have done a lot of Jewish books over the course of my career. I have had around 50 books published. And I have illustrated mostly all of them. In excruciating detail. Won a few Sydney Taylor silver honor book awards, a Koret Foundation and William Allen White honor book award, and many others for them. But sometimes, the art director in me—I had been the art director for Scribner’s—or the teacher—I taught at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan 18 years—felt that it is essential to have someone else give a different point of view to this story. A different look. And it was always a Muslim individual. Even though I love to paint all the details of Islamic art like rugs, borders, decorations, and architecture, and many people have compared my art to Persian miniatures, I know Mehrdohkt is from Iran, and she would add to the text in a wonderful way, which she did. When I saw her portfolio online, I said to myself, <i>I hope she does the illustrations</i>. And it was such a treat to hear the news that she stopped what she was doing to do this book of mine, which became ours. Being an artist, I do have a critical eye, but I also can appreciate what goes into creating the art.</div>

<i><b><span style="color: #0b5394;">4. What are you hoping this book will accomplish for children?</span></b></i><br />
I wasn’t aware when I began to travel to schools in 1995 how much of Africa was Islamic. When I was in Addis in 1995, terrorist bombs had blown up the restaurant we were supposed to celebrate my visit in for dinner when I arrived. I don’t think the world was as conscious of what was developing slowly throughout other countries full of poverty and unrest. Maybe leaders did, but I wasn’t aware. Or my friends. Now we are. We are New Yorkers and were in the city days after the towers came down. You could see the smoldering over the city from my son’s apartment at the time and smell it and hear the fighter planes over Long Island where I live.<br />
<br />
The world has been in turmoil probably forever. Although now, it feels much more so. Instead of moving toward peace there seems to be unrest, chaos, and sometimes a true lack of kindness, caring, and empathy. It feels upside down, and what is right and moral and ethical is not always valued. The shift has been painful, and I do hope something better evolves. Each person has to try and make a difference, no matter how infinite.<br />
<br />
I hope for this book in some small way, through two small boys, differences can also be seen as similarities. We all hopefully want to be loved, understood, and appreciated.<br />
<br />
Moe and Mo try to do that by bringing their families, Jewish and Muslim, together.</div>

<i><b><span style="color: #0b5394;">5. You are also an artist, so what was it like taking a step back and letting Mehrdohkt do the illustrations for this book? What about her illustrations surprised you the most?</span></b></i><br />
It was fine taking a step back once I knew it was in such good hands. I know she was nominated for a Kate Greenaway. There are things I might have added or done, and I am certain, there are things the artist added that I might have forgotten, so it all was so rewarding in the end. I find her technique interesting. Having worked digitally myself and with collage on<i> Mousterpiece: a mouse-sized guide to modern art</i>, <i>Paths to Peace, Saturday Night at the Beastro, </i>and <i>Let There Be Light</i>, to name a few, it was fascinating to see how Mehrdohkt employed it in such a unique way. I really loved it. And her exuberance for color. I appreciated that. Especially since Matisse is one of my favorite artists. Her hues!<br />
<br />
<i><b><span style="color: #0b5394;">6. What part of the book are you most excited to share with readers?</span></b></i><br />
I think each person brings their own sensibility, history, psychology to any book.<br />
<br />
One of my grandson’s loved what he called the “banana” moon in the sky. When I get up in the middle of the night, or see the cycle of the moon, I have learned so much more since doing this book. I also like having all the non-fiction backmatter at the end of the story. It adds to a better understanding of the holidays and people. Especially, for people of different faiths. I am excited to share the diversity and the similarity of Moe and Mo. Children seem accepting and open. I hope the adults reading this are as well. I fear a number might not be. They might be closed because of what occurs in the world politically. I hope maybe this book, in any book’s small way, finds an audience. It was six years in the making and so much hard work and passion goes into every book.<br />

Traci sent the manuscript to our general submissions before she was agented. It was pulled from the “slush pile” because it was so well written and structured, and we jumped on it right away, emailing her to ensure it was still available. While an editor at a different house was also interested, we made an offer quickly and lucky for us, Traci came on board. Traci’s varied career experience, her thoughtful consideration about how to portray her characters, and her careful eye while looking at artwork rival those of a more seasoned author. <br />

We have another book coming from Traci soon, and she’s sold manuscripts to other publishers as well. Traci has a long children’s-book career in front of her, and we’re so pleased to have worked with her from the beginning. <br />

And he’s appeared with Michelle at promotional events, too! When we offered him the opportunity to illustrate author Barry Wittenstein’s picture book about how the Band-Aid was invented, he jumped at the chance. Chris is a background artist on Archer, an animated show for adults on FX, and he’d been wanting to try picture books. <br />

Chris is a dream to work with—he’s thoughtful and deadline-oriented. He is also full of surprises with his art. He hid lots of Easter eggs (in the pop-culture sense of the word: intentional hidden messages or secret features) in Boo-Boos. On the spread set in a park, the couple tending to the crying child is based on one of his favorite John Singer Sargent portraits—<a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/12140">Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Phelps Stokes</a>, which Chris first saw at the MET in 2006 and has loved ever since. The park itself if a combination of <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=boston+public+garden&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS762US762&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwis66C-0vbbAhXl5YMKHdbtBY8Q_AUICygC&biw=1920&bih=947">Boston Public Garden</a> and <a href="https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS762US762&biw=1920&bih=947&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=7_o0W9udCcrbjwSsgo6ICQ&q=arnold+arboretum&oq=arnold+arboretum&gs_l=img.3...0.0.0.7342.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0..0.0....0...1c..64.img..0.0.0....0.tDBy0Tp2C2M">Arnold Arboretum</a> in Jamaica Plain, MA, places that Chris and his wife used to visit often. The storefront in the city scene is modeled after the storefront in Edward Hopper’s 1927 painting <a href="https://www.mfa.org/collections/object/drug-store-33293">Drug Store</a> which Chris often saw at the MFA in Boston. The spread with the WWII soldiers was inspired by Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s Shaw Memorial—the bronze monument of Robert Gould Shaw and the <a href="https://www.gettysburgdaily.com/54th-massachusetts-memorial/">Massachusetts 54th Regiment</a> across from the Massachusetts State House in Boston. Chris used Saint-Guadens’s technique of creating the illusion of more soldiers simply by repeating rifles in the air. (Fun fact: Chris and his wife have visited all three casts of this memorial: at the MA State House, at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and a bronze recast at the Saint Guadens National Historic Site in tiny Cornish, New Hampshire. Chris takes his art seriously!) And finally, the composition for the suburban street was inspired by a <a href="http://www.getty.edu/art/collection/objects/825/edouard-manet-the-rue-mosnier-with-flags-french-1878/">Manet painting called Rue Mosnier</a> that Chris always liked. Chris also used a splatter painting that his daughter did when she was two as a faint background texture on some of the spreads, so someday she’ll find out he helped make the book! <br />

Chris is hard at work on the art for a second picture book with us, a poetry book collected/edited by Lee Bennett Hopkins called I Am Someone Else: Poems About Pretending. We hope he’ll work with us for a long time to come!<br />

(We wanted another Navajo creator for the book, and we also wanted to bring more Native voices into publishing.) One day, author Nancy Bo Flood, who lived and worked on the Navajo Nation for fifteen years, emailed to alert us about an artist who she’d met at an arts fair in Colorado. She really liked his sheep character, and we had a look. We approached Johnny and asked if he’d ever considered illustrating picture books. We were thrilled when he said yes. </div>

Johnny’s debut book is actually his self-published <a href="http://shop.badwinds.com/item/the-wool-of-jonesy"><i>The Wool of Jonesy</i></a>, which won an American Indian Library Association middle-grade honor book award this year. But we’re including him in this blogpost because his first trade-published picture book is First Laugh—Welcome Baby, for which he created a family who lives and works in varied locations and across cultures. His characters leap off the page, and his warm palette creates a homeyness just right for this book. </div>

Once the art for his first book was done, we got right on the phone with Johnny to find out what else he wanted to do, and shortly after that we signed him up for <a href="https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-industry-news/article/76363-rights-report-week-of-march-19-2018.html"><i>Hey, Dog</i></a> by Tony Johnston, due out in Summer 2019. We hope Johnny will keep making books with us in the future. <br />

(Sam says the monsters are derived from traditional English folklore—very cool!) Yolanda jumped at the chance to make an offer on the book, and Charlesbridge can’t wait to bring his debut project to the market. <br />

Sam is deeply thoughtful about his work. We’ve had creative and lively discussions about typeface, page designs, paper color, and the function of borders—just to name a few topics! We love how Sam’s work is playful and spooky at the same time. Sam’s also works as a 3D visual artist for Wayfair, where he further hones his creative abilities. </div>

Keep an eye out for Alfred and his book of monsters, creeping into stores in time for Halloween next year. Given how much we love his debut book, we can’t wait to see what’s next!</div>
